SHINGLE ROOFING

Asphalt Shingles

Where do we start?

They are affordable, easy to install, modular, and actually perform quite well in the Florida climate. We've been installing them for decades, and not much has changed in the category.

On this page, we'll talk about:

- Why we like asphalt shingles

- What's new in your average shingle roof

- How much does your average shingle roof cost

Remember, the following information is simply the opinions of active Florida roofers, AJ and Alex Amaya, based on their experiences in the field here in Sarasota, Bradenton, and North Port, Florida.

Asphalt shingles are the go-to roof here in Florida. They are by far the most common roof we install. The most popular brands here are GAF Timberline HDZ, Atlas Pinnacle Pristine, and Tamko Heritage. No matter the neighborhood, from gated communities to your average city home, you'll likely find one of these brands happily installed on a roof.

Here at 2nd Gen Roofing, we install all three of these brands. One of the main things we love about these shingles is their application diversity. They can be installed on a simple single-family home in Bradenton and perform well on a steep two-story home on Siesta Key. The applications are endless. The colors are gorgeous, whether it's your classic GAF Shakewood, the new Tamko ThunderStorm Grey, or the beautiful Atlas Coastal Granite. You can be sure you'll find a color that perfectly matches the look you have planned for your home.

Our customers love the little maintenance required with these roofs. Simply keep the leaves off and the gutters clean, and that's about it. If you do happen to have an incident, like a tree limb falling or a hurricane, these shingle roofs are very modular. Repairs usually involve just a few shingles being replaced, and you're back on track. No waiting for specific colors or for the manufacturer to send out extras. You can often find these shingles at your local hardware store in case of an emergency.

Nowadays, with their extra sticky glue strips, wide nailing zones, and state-of-the-art peel and stick underlayment, these asphalt roofs are getting dangerously close to tile roof longevity (over 20 years) for half the cost. For some, this is a no-brainer! Needless to say, if you are in the market for a new roof, an asphalt shingles estimate should definitely be on the table.

So, How Much Will This New Shingle Roof Cost?

As you've likely heard a million times, prices have been increasing at an accelerated pace over the past few years. Before 2020, prices were nearly flat for over five years! The good news is that with all the price increases, shingle manufacturers have "caught up" with each other, meaning most brands are now nearly the same price.

This means you, the homeowner, have more power to pick and choose the brand you'd like to have installed on your home. Beware of the roofer that only pushes one brand; he likely has an "arrangement" or may be contracted into that particular brand of shingle. Now is the time to hold these brands accountable for raising their prices over the past few years. Pick a color you love, a brand you feel confident is worth today's premium, and most importantly, have us at 2nd Gen Roofing install those shingles for you. Together, we'll ensure you won't have to worry about your roof for years. Give us a call or text.

As of June 2024, our shingle estimates average around $13,500. However, this is not an exact estimate and simply reflects our average estimate. For your detailed quote, click on the truck below to see exactly what your roof will cost.
